Man vs. the elements: return to Gilardi's
In another battle for survival, we attempt to overcome the deadly swirling currents and gale force winds of the Petaluma river. Why would we risk our lives yet again? Because it's there (and nearby), and Gilardi's has beer.

Well, the regular reader may have noticed we tend to mess about on the river a lot. We'll have to venture further afield before too long, but it's there and just too darned convenient for a quick adventure.

So, we dropped the boat in the river and pre-positioned the trailer for pickup at Gilardi's. We rigged the boat in the water when we got back but quickly decided we won't do it this way again; it's so much easier and faster to do this on the trailer and just plop the thing into the water ready to go.

Several snaps of the river landscape this time of year. As you can see, the hills are a bit brown by now as we haven't really seen rain for many months. In fact, we're nearing a drought so if you have any spare water, please send it to us

Finally we made it to Gilardi's - without incident - a first for us, and even moored up without hitting anything.

So off we went for a well earned Mythos Hellenic lager and a large plate of all sorts of Greek things.

All was well until Shawn returned to dock; the gaff broke as it was dropped so a new piece will have to be made before the boat goes out again. Probably a combination of twisting as it dropped and old age. Should be easy to build a new one and fit it before next week.

Still, wouldn't be a Mark and Shawn Grand Feat (tm) if something didn't break would it?

Gilardi's also has a couple of fixer-uppers for sale. A bit of epoxy and filler, and a lick of paint and is all that's needed.

Any reasonable offer probably wouldn't be refused.

Today's battle against the elements was partly to practice for next week's Petaluma River Festival, and partly to prove we could actually make it to Gilardi's without breaking down.

Turned out to be a beautiful day for messing about on the river. A steady breeze, mostly in the right direction, and the river practically to ourselves. Note our super-fast wake.

Fully refreshed, Shawn decided to take the boat out for a quick solo spin. The wind had got up a bit while we'd been inside so he treated all the other diners with several grand feats of driving the boat around in circles.

And check out these cool things. When you back down a ramp you can't see the trailer which makes life hard. The answer: telescopic balls on magnets you attach wherever. Available at Harbor Freight as you may have guessed.

Mullings:

1. Rig the boat on land if you can.

2. Add an extra 30 mins to your departure time as people always seem to drop by and ask what kind of boat it is.
